Specialized BG Pro Carbon Road Shoe -

These are a set of reasonably lightweight shoes, with a very stiff carbon sole. Honestly, I can’t tell the difference in stiffness between manufacturers with carbon soled shoes, but they seem stiff to me. The buckle is great, and can adjust in length, which I appreciate (I have sort of narrow feet). Also importantly, the buckle is totally replaceable.

Here are the things that I think are actually important about the shoes:
  1. The uppers seem to be made of some sort of synthetic leather that doesn’t stretch too badly (though more than say, Sidis) when they get wet/hot
  2. They are NOT good for keeping out water
  3. Conversely, they cool your feet pretty well
  4. There is a lot of room in the toe box - nice if you have a wide foot, a little roomy if they’re narrow. Not as wide as a Sidi Mega, perhaps, but wide-ish.
  5. They come with BG insoles - these are the best insoles I’ve ever used. It makes a surprising amount of difference in how comfy the shoe is. They supposedly have a metatarsal button that keeps your feet from getting hotspots. Maybe it works - I don’t get hotspots in these shoes. More importantly, you can get foot beds with arch or pronation support, which aligns your foot better with your hips. This actually does effect me, and I do see some difference between these and my old Nike shoes (which were way too short - sizing error)
